The Lord DOES Provide

The only time the phrase, "The Lord Will Provide" is used in the Bible is to formally name a site central to the Old Testament story of Abraham' and the faith he exhibited when he was seconds away from taking his son's life in a God-commanded sacrifice. Earlier in the story, Isaac had asked his father where the lamb for the offering was going to come from and Abraham responded that God would take care of it. Once God spared Abraham the horrible task of killing his son and then provided a ram as that which would be laid on the alter, Abraham called the place, "The Lord Will Provide" (Genesis 22:14).

This event in Abraham's life wasn't the first time he had been asked to trust in the truest sense of the word. When we're introduced to this great man of faith, he is quickly told by the Creator to leave his home and everything he's known to go to a later-to-be-named location. Without any hesitation, Abram (as he was known then) packed up and left carrying with him a sincere faith in the Lord. When God promised him a son, even in spite of some doubt, Abraham trusted in the Lord to do what He had already done -- faithfully keep His promises. Had Abraham not been required to face these tests of faith, you and I would miss out on reading about the great choices he made and how we can work to emulate him in our lives today.

Of the many wonderful lessons we learn from this account of Abraham's life, perhaps the greatest is one that we need to bring to remembrance frequently in our lives. Each of us can likely testify to uncertainties we've experienced in our lives wherein we've wondered what the end result will be. Perhaps we've wondered whether or not we'd get the right job, meet the perfect person to marry, raise our kids to serve god, or meet the financial obligations that burden us. Christians must recall that even when things didn't make sense to Abraham that the Lord provided for him. The same is true today!

The Lord Will Provide was a specific place appointed by Abraham. Let us work daily to make sure that The Lord Will Provide isn't a mere destination but a real part of who we are and how we live. One of the greatest things we have "going for us" is this ability to trust in our God and show a world filled with doubt what it means to be anchored in faith. Our determination to depend on God, His word, and His strength serves as a boost of confidence to us as we live in His service and to those whom we work daily to teach and influence for good.
