God -- The Really Incredible Knitter

Of all the things that God is likened to, thinking of Him as one who knits things isn't something that likely comes to mind for most people. After all, we might say, knitting is for "older ladies" who sit in their rocking chairs for hours on end making garments for their grandchildren. Yet, God is really an incredible knitter and we are His material. As a result of His abilities, we are more privileged than we can possibly imagine.

Paul wrote that it was his desire that his efforts would result in Christian hearts being "encouraged" and "being knit together in love" (Colossians 2:2). The act of knitting involves taking separate materials and bringing them together. This is exactly what God does when He adds us to His church (Acts 2:47). God takes men and women who were without hope and without the advantage of a heavenly Parent and adopts them into His own family, calling us His children and granting us hope. In doing so, He knits us close to Him. It is only with our own choice to sin that we can cause that tight bond to be broken.

Additionally, Paul points out the great blessing that we have in fellowship not just with God, but with His fellow children. Being a Christian comes with loads of benefits and certainly one of the greatest of those benefits is having the spiritual support of brothers and sisters in Christ. James talks in detail about the needs that we'll have from time to time and how our spiritual siblings can assist during those times (James 5:13-16). By knitting us together, God provides us an opportunity to love each other, care for each other, and consider one another as we strive to build up one another in the most holy faith (Jude 1:20).

Thanks be to God for knitting us together with Him. Praise be to our Father for knitting us together with each other. Every Christian has a talent that is different and unique to himself. The great design of God is that through the union of various Christians, fused together to become a spiritual family, we can strengthen each other, embolden each other, and comfort each other as we work for His glory. Thanks and praise be to Him for His incredible knitting abilities and what it means to each of us as we live in service to Him.
