The Last Days of 2009

With only four days left in 2009, it is certainly accurate to say that we are living in the last days of this year. In reality, we are living in the last days of our lives as, compared to eternity, our lives are very brief. James puts our lives in perspective by talking about the riches that some put their trust in. "Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness again you... you have heaped up treasure in the last days," the inspired writer records (James 5:3). The thing that James wants us to appreciate is that all the work we do in this life must be kept in perspective -- this life won't last!

When Job considered all the things which were occurring in his difficult days, he too concluded that this life isn't about the things one possesses. Job states, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there" (Job 1:21). He understood that his life wouldn't last forever and that, even in spite of his status as a very wealthy man, there were things that were much more important than his bank accounts. The rich fool failed to adopt that mentality and when he considered all of "his" riches, God called him a fool and told him that all of his plans were for naught as he would die that night (Luke 12:18-20).

Each day we live is one day closer to eternity. Indeed, we are each living in the last days of our lives and the best thing that we can do is to prepare ourselves as if today were the last day we were to live. While preparing for eternity and living in our last days, let us resolve ourselves to be more like Christ and less like ourselves, making our service to Him the true, number one priority of our lives.

Last Days of 2009 -- First Days of 2010

As we reflect on the final days of the year and prepare for a new one, let us find each and every area for improvements in our lives...

  • Can my prayer life be more regular and more meaningful?
  • Can my study habits be better so that I might learn more?
  • Can I find more opportunities to help out church members in need?
  • Can I attend church services more regularly & be at each service?
