A More Convenient Time?
One of the most frightening things is when someone we care about puts off making his life right with God. Each of us have likely known someone who has taken the eternal risk by "putting off" becoming a Christian only to have his life shortened by a car-accident, heart-attack, or otherwise life-ending event.
This kind of procrastination isn't new and has been a behavior described in scripture on numerous occasions. In Acts 24, the apostle Paul stood before Felix telling the governor about God, the Way, and the resurrection of the dead. At the conclusion of the apostle's powerful defense, and after Felix had given some thought to all that Paul had said, Felix answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you" (Acts 24:25).
The great danger in depending on a more "convenient" time to change our ways or counting on tomorrow to become a Christian is the fact that we can't rely on the future. James wrote, "For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away." James even cautions us about thinking or saying that we'll do this or that "tomorrow" (James 4:13-14).
Jesus Himself cautions us about self-centered planning.
The Son of Man said, "one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." When He therefore spoke of the man who had so much stuff that he prepared to tear down his barns and build bigger barns so that he could eat, drink, and be merry in the future (a future which he was certain he'd be around for) Jesus called such an outlook foolish (Luke 12:15-20).
We can't count on the future or consider making changes at a more "convenient time" as that day may never happen. Instead, let us take advantage of the time that God has granted us today to make our lives right with God. After examining ourselves today and each day, let us be certain to see our faults, pray for forgiveness, and resolve ourselves to do His will today and always!
