The Laborers Are Few
Jesus recognized that there was a lot of work to do while He was on earth. On one occasion, our Savior stated, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few" (Matthew 9:37). As we think about Labor Day, let us remember that the Christian has been assigned the greatest labor of all -- bringing the lost to Christ. And Jesus was exactly right -- there are many to be saved, and few who are able and willing to teach the lost.
Jesus knew of the work He had to do and He wanted His followers to do their work as well. John records the Christ as saying, "Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!" (John 4:35). It's an awesome thing to think about -- we have much to do and our Savior expects us to do it!
Yet, Jesus Christ has given us everything we need in order to complete our work. According to the Apostle Peter, the divine power of God "has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness" (II Peter 1:3). Jesus came and taught about the love and justice of God. The inspired writers who wrote the New Testament provided us with the gospel, which, according to Paul "is the power of God to salvation" (Romans 1:16).
During this weekend, many of us take some time off from work to rest and relax. But, as Christians, let us remember that there is no break from the work which Christians are involved in. Each day, let us be so concerned about the spiritual welfare of others that we continue to labor diligently in service to our God.
"Your labor is not in vain in the Lord" I Corinthians 15:58
The labor in which we're involved is worthwhile and profitable. And, it's the most important work we'll ever do!
"Call the laborers and give them their wages." Matthew 20:8
One day, we'll stand before God and receive the wages of our labor as well!
"Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers." Philemon 1:24
In our work as Christians, we too are "fellow laborers" with each other in our efforts to spread God's word!
