Given Into Our Hands: God's Continual Deliverance
Throughout the Old Testament, God's people routinely found themselves looking down the proverbial barrels of their enemies' guns. And on those occasions, as long as the people of God were in subjection to their Creator, He promised deliverance and kept those promises by delivering Israel's enemies into their hands.
In Deuteronomy 2:24, God commanded Moses to lead the people over the River Arnon into the territory of King Sihon the Amorite. In instructing His servant and the man who led Israel out of Egypt, God stated that He had, "given into your hand" the enemy king. When the king refused to allow Israel to pass through his land, God granted Israel the ability to fully destroy the enemy nation (Deuteronomy 2:30-34).
God made the same promise to Israel's next leader when He told Joshua that He had given Jericho over to Israel (Joshua 6:2). And the same promise was made regarding the king of Ai, his people, his land, and his city (Joshua 8:1). These were promises made by God which, as He has always done, are fully and totally fulfilled.
When Sennacherib, king of Assyria threatened Judah's king Hezekiah by sending the arrogant Rabshakeh to urge the righteous monarch to surrender, he scoffed at the notion that any god could deliver people from the Assyrian army (Isaiah 36:14-15). Of course, the Assyrians had trusted in false gods and did not know the Creator of the universe nor His great power. Instead of Hezekiah and his people being destroyed, the evil Assyrian king would be assassinated by his own sons (Isaiah 37:37-38). As always, God gave the Assyrians into the hands of Hezekiah and his people.
Some 2,700 years later, God is still providing deliverance. He has promised us that He'll give our enemies into our hands, telling us that by depending on Him and continuing to faithfully serve Him that we can rest assured that He'll be here for us (Hebrews 13:5). In history, God has never promised a lack of challenges. Rather, He has promised strength which comes from Him. We rejoice today that He still provides that strength to each of us each day of our lives.
