What Is Faith?

In Hebrews 11:1, the scriptures succinctly define faith as, "the substance of things hoped for" and "the evidence of things not seen." Yet, Christians must understand that there is more to faith than just one, single definition. Faith, instead, is an all-important Biblical topic which merits our attention and understanding. Many volumes could be (and have been) written on the subject of faith. Among all that has and could be written, it's vital for us to appreciate faith in four keys ways.

First, faith must be seen as something not gained in some supernatural form but rather through the internalization of God's word which leads to an acceptance of its teachings. Paul says that, "faith comes by hearing , and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). When you and I hear God's word preached, taught, and see it lived, we learn about God and His plan. Therein lies the beginning of faith which is so vital to our Christian lives.

Second, faith is a specific work of God. Oftentimes there is lengthy discussion and significant disagreement among religious people as to the relationship between faith and works. James tells us that without the two married together, salvation can't be realized (James 2:24). According to Jesus, our belief in the Christ is a key part of the work of God (John 6:29). It makes sense, then, as to why the apostle Paul told us to work our salvation, which is dependent on our faith, with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Faith isn't something we'll wake up one morning and all of the sudden have. It is instead a great work of our salvation and obedience to our God.

Third, faith is a powerful thing. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus repeatedly healed people of their ailments and forgave them their sins, telling them that their faith had made them well (Matthew 9:22; Luke 18:42). When we pray to our Father, our petitions to Him are a part of an active communication which we are to have with our heavenly parent. James reminds us of prayer's power by telling us that it works wonders and "avails much" (James 5:16). When we pray, we do so with faith, knowing not only that our God will hear us but that He will answer our prayers in His time and according to His will.

Finally, prayer is an absolute must in getting to heaven. The Bible tells us that without a faith in Jesus Christ, we will die in our sins and that without that same belief, it will be impossible to please our Creator (John 8:24; Hebrews 11:6). Of course, common sense dictates this fact--without a belief in Jesus Christ and salvation through Him, it wouldn't make sense to seek heaven through Him. Jesus said He was "the way, the truth, and the life" and it is only through our faith in Him that we can be pleasing to Him (John 14:6).

During a new week, let us continue to work on our faith trying each day to be stronger and better in His service.
