An Anchor of the Soul
The Hebrew writer records, This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek" (Hebrews 6:19-20).
Salvation through Jesus is surer and better than anything man could come up with. The world we live in is filled with uncertainty and disappointment. As Christians, we have our Savior to whom we are grounded and, no matter what difficulties we are presented with, we are confident that we can succeed with His aid.
It is equally important to note that Hebrews 6:19 highlights the "Presence behind the veil," speaking of the incredible access we have to the Father. In the dark moments of Jesus' death, the Bible tells us that the veil of the Jerusalem temple was torn in two (Matthew 27:51). With that literal break came the more important figurative access to speak to God in prayer through His Son Jesus Christ. And it almost goes without saying (yet we say so here) that being able to pray to God is a great tool in building our confidence in His service.
Finally, it is worthwhile to note that with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, we are privileged to have Him serve as our eternal High Priest (Hebrews 6:20). An important theme throughout the book of Hebrews, the perfection of Christ compared to the imperfection of previous priests, is a testimony to God's plan for us. In the next chapter, the letter's author continues his discussion of this important change in the priesthood by pointing out that, while Old Testament priests needed to be forgiven of their sins, our one Priest has no sin at all! (Hebrews 7:26-27).
The confidence you and I have as a result of these great assurances keep us grounded, solid, and sure. The great anchor of hope, Christ Himself, has never failed and He never will. As we continue our lives in His service, we can count on Him and share this wonderful news with others!
